External Camera Setup

Run a professional photo booth on iPad with the optics and mounting flexibility of an external camera — without leaving ZillaBooth. This guide is the full setup reference for UVC webcams and USB streaming, PTP tethered DSLR and mirrorless, supported models, cables and power, event recovery, and troubleshooting.

Overview

ZillaBooth on iPad works with external cameras over two USB protocols. Both appear in the same Settings → Camera → Camera Selection menu — you plug in, pick your device, and go. ZillaBooth handles protocol detection, format selection, live-view startup, and hot-plug recovery. Manual Configure options are available when you want them, not required for a working booth.

  • UVC (USB Video Class) — plug-and-play USB webcams, mirrorless and DSLR bodies in USB Streaming / video-call mode, and HDMI capture cards that present an HDMI input as a standard UVC source. Fastest path to a live preview from the camera’s video feed.
  • PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) — full tethered DSLR and mirrorless setup with compositional live view and full-resolution still captures from the camera sensor. Enable Tethered DSLR in Settings → Camera before connecting a PTP body.

Supporting both protocols gives you more flexibility, not more friction: use UVC when you want the quickest setup, or PTP when you want full-sensor still quality. Many Canon and Sony bodies support both — choose one mode on the camera before connecting. If your camera appears in Camera Selection, it is ready to use.

Requirements

  • Device: iPad running iOS 26 or later (USB external camera is not available on iPhone).
  • Subscription: Active ZillaBooth Pro subscription (includes all ZillaBooth Pocket features, including built-in Camera Selection).
  • PTP tethering: For DSLR/mirrorless tethering, also enable Tethered DSLR in Settings → Camera and allow connected-device access when iPad prompts you.
  • Hardware: UVC-compatible external camera or PTP-compatible DSLR/mirrorless body, a data-capable USB-C cable, and (recommended for long events) a powered USB-C hub or dock so the iPad can charge while the camera is connected.
  • iPad system setting: Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Wired Accessories and set access to Always Allow so the iPad can communicate with connected USB cameras.

Choose a built-in camera

Before connecting USB hardware, you can pick which built-in lens ZillaBooth uses — front wide, back wide, telephoto, and other lenses available on your iPad.

  1. Open ZillaBooth Settings → Camera → Camera Selection.
  2. Choose the built-in lens you want from the menu (every lens your iPad physically has is listed).
  3. Close Settings. Built-in lens changes apply when Settings closes or at the start of your next session.

Note: Manual lens picks in Settings behave differently from USB hot-plug — see Event resilience for how ZillaBooth handles cable connect and disconnect live during a booth session.

UVC Webcams and USB Streaming

Connect a UVC-compatible USB or USB-C device to your iPad — a dedicated webcam, a mirrorless body in USB Streaming mode, or an HDMI capture card — for professional booth optics, flexible mounting, and instant live preview from the camera’s video feed.

How to connect (UVC)

  1. On your camera body (if applicable), enable USB Streaming, UVC, or Video calls / streaming mode. See the supported cameras list for model-specific menu paths.
  2. Connect the camera to your iPad with a data-rated USB-C cable. For all-day events, use a powered USB-C hub so the iPad stays charged.
  3. Open ZillaBooth Settings → Camera → Camera Selection. Your external camera appears by name (for example, “Canon Digital Camera” or the webcam’s product name).
  4. Select the device to use it for preview and capture. If more than one UVC device is connected, each appears as its own row — pick the one you want.

What ZillaBooth does automatically (UVC)

  • Detects compatible UVC devices and adds them to Camera Selection.
  • Prefers the connected USB camera for the active session (you can still override and choose a built-in lens).
  • Picks a sensible resolution and frame rate automatically — open Configure only if you want manual control.
  • If the camera disconnects, falls back to your built-in lens and switches back when you replug.

HDMI capture cards: Devices such as Elgato Cam Link present the HDMI input as a standard UVC source. Connect any HDMI-capable camera body to the card; ZillaBooth sees the card, not the body name.

DSLR and Mirrorless Tethering (PTP)

Tether a Canon EOS DSLR or mirrorless body over USB for compositional live view and full-resolution still captures from the camera sensor — not the downsampled video frame from USB Streaming. Canon EOS bodies are the primary PTP target; enable the beta feature and test your exact body before the event.

How to connect (PTP)

  1. On the camera body, set image quality to JPEG or RAW+JPEG (RAW-only bodies may not deliver booth-ready files). Set exposure, flash, and lens settings on the camera — ZillaBooth does not remote-control ISO, aperture, or shutter speed.
  2. Connect the camera to your iPad with a data-rated USB-C cable. Use a powered hub for all-day events.
  3. Open ZillaBooth Settings → Camera and turn on Tethered DSLR. Allow connected-device access when iPad prompts you.
  4. Open Camera Selection. Your body appears as DSLR Camera — <model name> (or External — <model>). Select it and dismiss Settings.
  5. ZillaBooth matches a live-view profile, starts preview automatically, and handles shutter timing and file download. During capture you may briefly see “Saving from camera…” while the full-res file transfers.

What ZillaBooth handles for you (PTP)

  • Protocol and live-view profile matching (Canon EOS first).
  • Capture timing and full-resolution file download.
  • Hot-plug fallback to the built-in iPad camera, and automatic return to the external camera when replugged.
  • Restart Camera Connection in Configure if preview stalls.

Dual-mode bodies: Many Canon EOS and Sony Alpha cameras can run in USB Streaming (UVC) or PTP tethering — not both at once. Pick one mode on the camera before connecting. UVC is faster to set up; PTP delivers full-sensor stills. See UVC Webcams and USB Streaming if you prefer plug-and-play video streaming.

Select and configure in ZillaBooth

Once your camera appears in Camera Selection:

  • Select the USB camera from Settings → Camera → Camera Selection to pin it for your next session.
  • Tap Configure on the USB camera row (or open Configure from the Current Settings card in the Camera section) to adjust resolution, frame rate, encoding, and horizontal mirror. A live preview shows exactly what guests will see.
  • Automatic vs Manual format: Leave format on Automatic for most booths, or switch to Manual to pick a specific resolution and frame rate your camera supports.
  • Restart Camera Connection: If preview stalls, use this button in Configure before replugging the cable.
  • Per-device memory: Configure settings are saved per physical camera and restored automatically when you reconnect the same device.

Event resilience — unplug, replug, and recovery

Photo booths at live events get bumped, unplugged, and replugged. ZillaBooth is built for that.

  • Cable accidentally unplugged: ZillaBooth immediately falls back to your iPad’s built-in front camera. Guests can keep taking photos — no app restart, no “camera not found” dead screen.
  • Camera plugged back in: ZillaBooth automatically switches back to the external USB camera. Your saved Configure settings (resolution, mirror, format) reload for that device.
  • Brief warm-up: UVC cameras may show a short “camera starting” moment while the stream initializes. Built-in stream health recovery handles silent stalls without operator intervention.
  • Built-in override: If you manually pick a built-in lens while USB is connected, ZillaBooth respects that choice until the USB camera is disconnected and reconnected — then auto-prefer USB resumes.
  • Operator alerts: With System Monitoring configured, a selected-camera fallback can also email your admin address (email-only; no on-screen badge for camera fallback).

This live hot-plug behavior is a core advantage for unattended and semi-attended booths: a loose cable does not stop the event.

Supported cameras

Unified list of cameras and devices ZillaBooth operators commonly use. Protocol shows how ZillaBooth connects to each model. Always use current camera firmware and a data-rated USB-C cable. If your device is not listed but appears in Camera Selection, it is supported.

Webcams and capture devices

  • USB webcams (Logitech Brio, Elgato Facecam, Razer Kiyo, and similar) — Protocol: UVC. Plug-and-play; no camera-body menu required.
  • HDMI capture cards (Elgato Cam Link 4K, Cam Link Pro, and similar) — Protocol: UVC. Connect any HDMI-capable camera body to the capture card; ZillaBooth sees the card as a UVC source.

Canon

Every Canon EOS and PowerShot body below is listed on its own line for search and setup reference. Regional names (Rebel, Kiss, xxxD) appear on the same line as the primary model name. Protocol shows how ZillaBooth connects on iPad.

  • Other Sony Alpha / ILCE bodies (PTP)Protocol: PTP (test with Tethered DSLR Beta). Live preview support varies by model.

Choosing UVC vs PTP

  • Choose UVC when you want the fastest setup, a dedicated webcam, an HDMI-fed body, or your mirrorless already in USB Streaming mode.
  • Choose PTP when you want full-resolution stills from a Canon EOS (or compatible PTP body) and compositional live view tied to the camera’s still capture pipeline.
  • Not sure? Plug in, open Camera Selection, and pick what appears. ZillaBooth handles the rest — no separate apps or drivers on iPad.

Cables, power, and long events

  • Use a data-rated USB-C cable — charge-only cables will not pass video. USB 3.x / Thunderbolt-rated cables are best for high-resolution streams.
  • For multi-hour booths, connect the iPad through a powered USB-C hub or dock so it can run the external camera and stay charged simultaneously.
  • Keep the iPad on AC power where possible. ZillaBooth’s Configure screen shows live battery, charging state, and thermal status under Power & Battery.
  • Many mirrorless bodies support USB power delivery while streaming; otherwise use the manufacturer’s AC adapter dummy battery for uninterrupted camera power.

Troubleshooting

DSLR does not appear in Camera Selection (PTP)

  • Confirm Tethered DSLR is on in Settings → Camera.
  • Allow connected-device access when iPad prompts you (Settings → Privacy & Security → Wired Accessories → Always Allow).
  • Set the camera to JPEG or RAW+JPEG; confirm the body is in PC / remote / tether-ready USB mode if it offers one.
  • Replug the cable and wait a few seconds. PTP bodies appear as DSLR Camera — <model>, not as a UVC webcam name.
  • If preview is unsupported for your model, the body may appear in Configure diagnostics only — try UVC USB Streaming mode on the same camera if available.

PTP preview is black or capture stalls

  • Open Configure and tap Restart Camera Connection.
  • Confirm JPEG or RAW+JPEG is enabled on the body; RAW-only may not produce booth-ready files.
  • Unplug and replug; ZillaBooth falls back to the built-in camera, then returns to the DSLR when reconnected.
  • For Canon EOS bodies, test with Tethered DSLR before the event — live-view profiles target Canon EOS lines first.

External camera does not appear in Camera Selection (UVC)

  • Confirm you are on iPad with an active ZillaBooth Pro subscription.
  • Check iPad Settings → Privacy & Security → Wired Accessories → Always Allow.
  • Verify the camera is in USB Streaming / UVC / Video calls mode — not photo import or remote-control-only USB mode.
  • Try a different USB-C cable known to support data (and USB 3 speeds for high-res bodies).
  • Replug the camera; wait a few seconds for the iPad to enumerate the device.

Preview is black or frozen

  • Open Configure External Camera and tap Restart Camera Connection.
  • Lower resolution or frame rate in Manual format mode.
  • Unplug and replug the USB cable; ZillaBooth will recover automatically.
  • On Canon bodies, disable exposure simulation in live view if the preview looks unnaturally dark when using flash.

Booth switched to the iPad front camera mid-event

This is intentional fail-safe behavior when the USB camera disconnects. Reconnect the cable — ZillaBooth automatically returns to the external camera and restores your saved Configure settings. Guests can continue shooting throughout. Optional: enable System Monitoring to email an admin when selected-camera fallback occurs.

Multiple USB devices connected

Each connected UVC device gets its own row in Camera Selection. Pick the correct device by name. Only one external camera is active at a time.

Camera connected but ZillaBooth still uses built-in lens

  • If you previously chose a built-in lens while USB was connected, disconnect and reconnect the USB camera to reset auto-prefer.
  • Explicitly select the USB camera row in Camera Selection and close Settings.
  • Confirm the camera is presenting UVC to the iPad (not a photo-transfer-only USB mode).
  • Camera Selection and Flash — Pick built-in lenses and flash behavior; Pro iPads can also use USB external cameras.
  • iPad Event Layout — Immersive full-screen iPad booth UI, with an optional attention-grabbing shutter.
  • System Monitoring — Email booth alerts and status digests to an admin; on-screen alerts with iPad Event Layout.
