USB External Camera Setup

Run a professional photo booth on iPad with the optics and mounting flexibility of an external camera — without leaving ZillaBooth. This guide covers built-in and USB camera selection, setup, supported mirrorless and DSLR bodies in UVC mode, and what happens if a cable is bumped mid-event (spoiler: the booth keeps running).

What ZillaBooth supports

ZillaBooth on iPad works with UVC (USB Video Class) external cameras — the same standard used by USB webcams and many professional cameras when set to USB Streaming or video-call mode. Supported sources include:

USB webcams — plug-and-play UVC devices connected via USB-C or a hub.
Mirrorless and DSLR bodies in UVC / USB Streaming mode — many Canon, Sony, Nikon, Fujifilm, and Panasonic cameras expose a live video feed over USB when configured correctly on the camera body.
HDMI capture cards — devices such as Elgato Cam Link that present an HDMI input to the iPad as a UVC camera (works with virtually any HDMI-capable camera body).

ZillaBooth discovers any UVC device the iPad exposes. There is no per-model allowlist in the app — if your camera appears in ZillaBooth’s Camera Selection menu, it is ready to use.

Requirements

Device: iPad running iOS 26 or later (USB external camera is not available on iPhone).
Subscription: Active ZillaBooth Pro subscription (includes all ZillaBooth Pocket features, including built-in Camera Selection).
Hardware: UVC-compatible external camera, a data-capable USB-C cable, and (recommended for long events) a powered USB-C hub or dock so the iPad can charge while the camera is connected.
iPad system setting: Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Wired Accessories and set access to Always Allow so the iPad can communicate with connected USB cameras.

Choose a built-in camera

Before connecting USB hardware, you can pick which built-in lens ZillaBooth uses — front wide, back wide, telephoto, and other lenses available on your iPad.

Open ZillaBooth Settings → Camera → Camera Selection.
Choose the built-in lens you want from the flat menu (every lens your iPad physically has is listed).
Close Settings. Built-in lens changes apply when Settings closes or at the start of your next session.

Note: Manual lens picks in Settings behave differently from USB hot-plug — see Event resilience below for how ZillaBooth handles cable connect and disconnect live during a booth session.

Connect an external camera

On your camera body, enable USB Streaming, UVC, or Video calls / streaming mode (see the supported cameras list for model-specific menu paths).
Connect the camera to your iPad with a data-rated USB-C cable. For all-day events, use a powered USB-C hub so the iPad stays charged.
Open ZillaBooth Settings → Camera → Camera Selection. Your external camera appears by name (for example, “Canon Digital Camera” or the webcam’s product name).
If more than one UVC device is connected, each appears as its own row — pick the one you want for preview and capture.

When a compatible USB camera is plugged in, ZillaBooth automatically prefers it for the active session. You can still override and choose a built-in lens from the same menu if you prefer.

Select and configure in ZillaBooth

Once your camera appears in Camera Selection:

Select the USB camera from Settings → Camera → Camera Selection to pin it for your next session.
Tap Configure on the USB camera row (or open Configure from the Current Settings card in the Camera section) to adjust resolution, frame rate, encoding, and horizontal mirror. A live preview shows exactly what guests will see.
Automatic vs Manual format: Leave format on Automatic for most booths, or switch to Manual to pick a specific resolution and frame rate your camera supports.
Restart Camera Connection: If preview stalls, use this button in Configure before replugging the cable.
Per-device memory: Configure settings are saved per physical camera and restored automatically when you reconnect the same device.

Event resilience — unplug, replug, and recovery

Photo booths at live events get bumped, unplugged, and replugged. ZillaBooth is built for that.

Cable accidentally unplugged: ZillaBooth immediately falls back to your iPad’s built-in front camera. Guests can keep taking photos — no app restart, no “camera not found” dead screen.
Camera plugged back in: ZillaBooth automatically switches back to the external USB camera. Your saved Configure settings (resolution, mirror, format) reload for that device.
Brief warm-up: UVC cameras may show a short “camera starting” moment while the stream initializes. Built-in stream health recovery handles silent stalls without operator intervention.
Built-in override: If you manually pick a built-in lens while USB is connected, ZillaBooth respects that choice until the USB camera is disconnected and reconnected — then auto-prefer USB resumes.

This live hot-plug behavior is a core advantage for unattended and semi-attended booths: a loose cable does not stop the event.

Supported cameras

The cameras below support UVC / USB Streaming when configured on the camera body. Sort order is by manufacturer. Always use the latest camera firmware and a data-rated USB-C cable.

Canon

Canon EOS R50 — Menu: Choose USB connection app → Video calls/streaming. Connect with Canon IFC-100U or equivalent USB-C data cable. UVC/UAC compliant; no extra software required on iPad.
Canon EOS R8 — Menu: Choose USB connection app → Video calls/streaming (or UVC/UAC streaming, depending on firmware). Use a data-capable USB-C cable; consider Canon’s AC adapter for multi-hour events.

Fujifilm

Fujifilm X-M5 — Enable the camera’s USB webcam / UVC streaming mode (see the X-M5 network/USB menu in your camera manual). Connect via USB-C; confirm the body appears in ZillaBooth Camera Selection before the event.

Nikon

Nikon Z30 — With current firmware, set Network menu → USB → USB streaming (UVC/UAC). UVC/UAC mode lets the iPad use the camera without desktop webcam utility software.
Nikon Z8 — Set Network menu → USB → USB streaming (UVC/UAC). Use Nikon’s UC-E24 USB cable or equivalent data cable; AC power recommended for long booth runs.

Panasonic

Panasonic Lumix S5IIX — Enable USB webcam / UVC mode in the camera’s USB/connectivity menu (see Lumix S5IIX manual for “USB Streaming” or webcam output). Connect with a USB-C data cable.

Sony

Sony Alpha ZV-E10 II — Menu: Network / Streaming → USB Streaming. Select output resolution, then connect USB-C. Supports UVC and UAC for video and audio.
Sony ZV-E10 — Menu: USB Streaming (Movie mode may be required). Connect with supplied or equivalent USB-C cable; choose Live Stream / USB Stream when prompted on camera startup.
Sony Alpha a7C II — Menu: USB Streaming under network/streaming settings. Set Smartphone Connect to Off if USB Streaming is grayed out; use a USB 3.2 data cable for best quality.
Sony Alpha a7 IV — Menu: USB Streaming. Update to current firmware; use USB 3.2 cable for 4K streaming where supported.

Also compatible

Any UVC webcam (Logitech Brio, Elgato Facecam, Razer Kiyo, and similar) works when it appears in Camera Selection. For camera bodies without native USB streaming, an HDMI → UVC capture card (Elgato Cam Link 4K, Cam Link Pro, and similar) presents professional HDMI output to ZillaBooth as a standard UVC source.

Cables, power, and long events

Use a data-rated USB-C cable — charge-only cables will not pass video. USB 3.x / Thunderbolt-rated cables are best for high-resolution streams.
For multi-hour booths, connect the iPad through a powered USB-C hub or dock so it can run the external camera and stay charged simultaneously.
Keep the iPad on AC power where possible. ZillaBooth’s Configure screen shows live battery, charging state, and thermal status under Power & Battery.
Many mirrorless bodies support USB power delivery while streaming; otherwise use the manufacturer’s AC adapter dummy battery for uninterrupted camera power.

Troubleshooting

External camera does not appear in Camera Selection

Confirm you are on iPad with an active ZillaBooth Pro subscription.
Check iPad Settings → Privacy & Security → Wired Accessories → Always Allow.
Verify the camera is in USB Streaming / UVC / Video calls mode — not photo import or remote-control-only USB mode.
Try a different USB-C cable known to support data (and USB 3 speeds for high-res bodies).
Replug the camera; wait a few seconds for the iPad to enumerate the device.

Preview is black or frozen

Open Configure External Camera and tap Restart Camera Connection.
Lower resolution or frame rate in Manual format mode.
Unplug and replug the USB cable; ZillaBooth will recover automatically.
On Canon bodies, disable exposure simulation in live view if the preview looks unnaturally dark when using flash.

Booth switched to the iPad front camera mid-event

This is intentional fail-safe behavior when the USB camera disconnects. Reconnect the cable — ZillaBooth automatically returns to the external camera and restores your saved Configure settings. Guests can continue shooting throughout.

Multiple USB devices connected

Each connected UVC device gets its own row in Camera Selection. Pick the correct device by name. Only one external camera is active at a time.

Camera connected but ZillaBooth still uses built-in lens

If you previously chose a built-in lens while USB was connected, disconnect and reconnect the USB camera to reset auto-prefer.
Explicitly select the USB camera row in Camera Selection and close Settings.
Confirm the camera is presenting UVC to the iPad (not a photo-transfer-only USB mode).
